Book of (H)ours Retreat on Holy Island, Northumberland.

Lindisfarne in Winter: Monday 28 January to Friday 1 February

I am delighted to be offering with Claire Gibbs, a bookbinder, heritage expert, naturalist and priest, among many other things, and Mary Fleeson, an artist at the Lindisfarne Scriptorium, a creative retreat on Lindisfarne in deepest winter.  In January, Holy Island is quiet and even more elemental than usual.  So we can be out with the wind, tides and birds or in beside the fire at the Open Gate Retreat House, the home of the Community of Aidan and Hilda. Over the course of our time together, we will make our own Book of (H)ours to take home.  We will learn about Illuminated Lettering, Books of Hours and the Lindisfarne Gospels and each day will  begin and end with optional chapel times.  There will also be time for personal reflection and quiet.  It will be creative, reflective and time out to consider our prayer/meditation lives.

If you want to know more about it get in touch with me.

If you want to book go to the Open Gate website:

  1. To Tess Ward, greetings. This sounds lovely. What is the accommodation like? Your Celtic Year book is very special…. Many thanks,

    • Thanks Christina. Its a nice old building and on the website you can see the options in terms of bedrooms. Though I haven’t stayed there myself it is a v established retreat house and I know many who have and never heard a single complaint so I would think fine. Aren’t the autumn colours beautiful! Tess

  2. Hi Tess,

This looks wonderful but I am far too anxious a long distance driver to cope with the journey in Winter. How are you? I hope all is going well for you. I often think of you and miss your slant on spiritual direction. I have just joined a new supervision group which is Ignation and all the others have done the Ignation course at the London Spirituality Centre. There is a real sense of combining spirituality with ecology which is good. I would love to one day attend a retreat with you again. If there is anything ever a bit further south, please let me know.

I am in the middle of running a contemplative camera group. Last part tomorrow and I have started up a poetry group. Both of these things I am really enjoying and hopefully others are as well.

    Every blessing to you.

    • Wow. What a lot you are doing. Sounds great. I have no other retreats planned at the moment. But will let you know if I do any down south. Blessings to you, Tess
